Chapter 19 – Slipping Away

Serrin sat on the floor of the Findoor throne room in the center of the force cage. The bars hummed with an almost living power and any time he so much as thought about using magic, he could feel the cage sap his strength away. He ignored everything outside of the cage, including any further questioning from Grian, who seldom left the throne room. The only thing he watched with any interest were the undead things that Grian had created. They stood by his side, day and night. They took no food, drank no water, and didn't even breathe. There was an occasional gasp or moan from them, but otherwise they showed little interest in anything going on around them. They caught Serrin's interest because of the occasional glance they spared toward him.

There was no instruction from Grian to watch Serrin, and Serrin moved very little from his cross-legged position in the center of the cage, but something in their black, empty eye sockets told him that he needed to watch them. Their touch was deadly to any living thing and even Lyecians were affected by it, though it took longer to drain the life away from a Lyecian. Serrin had watched several humans as they were hugged by these creatures – an embrace of death that stole their life force and turned them into another of the foul creatures.

Serrin didn't fear them. Had he been able to use magic, he could easily vaporize them. His interest was due to pity. They were once living men and women, and were now forced to continue their existence in an eternal unlife.

He was watching these creatures when something Grian said caught his attention.

“What do you mean 'She still lives'?” Grian shouted at his court.

“Your Highness, the bard and the dragon brought evidence at the last moment that subverted our letter. He also destroyed the Dark Lord in a raid on our border. Caldoor is mobilizing their troops for defense, and the element of surprise is lost.”

Grian took a deep breath, like he was trying to calm himself after receiving the bad news. There was an eerie silence in the room, and then Grian shouted, “Obitas nexasa mortai.”

A ball of black fire erupted from his hand and struck the councilor in the chest, snuffing out his life and causing him to fall to the floor in a loose heap. There was a grumble in the room that went silent the moment Grian looked up at them. “Send word to the nobles: there is an opening on the King's Court.”

The rest of the court laughed at this, but a runner was dispatched to do just that. Grian paced at the front of the room and for the first time since Serrin had arrived in the castle, Grian looked as though he was losing control. Serrin watched with interest over the next few minutes as Grian walked back and forth in front of the throne. The dark wizard's pace increased as he did so and Serrin could see the anger welling up inside of him.
